    Eye Clinic Liaison Officer

Eye Clinical Liaison Officers (ECLO) are vision impairment experts usually based within NHS hospitals. If we think you may benefit from ECLO support we can make a referral to one on your behalf for support.

ECLOs are there to provide you with up-to-date information and put you in touch with useful services by making referrals on your behalf.

    They can advise you on:

    • Eye conditions

    • Welfare benefits you may be entitled to

    • Remaining in employment or re-training

    • Mental health and emotional wellbeing

    • Children's services and where to get help with difficulties at school

    • Voluntary organisations and local support groups

ECLOs are also able to explain the process of becoming registered as blind or partially sighted and the benefits of being registered.

    Registering as Visually Impaired

Registering as Visually Impaired (where appropriate) can open the door to access support for you both hollistically and financially. You can ask your Modality Ophthalmologist or Optometrist if you are eligable for registration. If you meet the criteria they will arrange completion of a Certificate of Visual Impairment (CVI) and send this for processing.

    Low Vision Assessment

As part of your rehabilitation you may be offered referral for a low vision assessment. This is a consultation with a low vision specialist (usually an optometrist or optician) who will measure your functional vision and make recommendations on aids which may assist you.

Depending on your address we will make referral to a low vision specialist at your local hospital, or at the local charity Birmingham Focus. For more information on Focus Birmingham, click the button below.
